The earliest written mentioned in Shakespeare:

There is an old tale goes, that Herne the Hunter

This tale of Herne the Hunter for a truth.

Presently, there are many references to Herne though out serious texts, recorded folklore, stories, games and film.

One interesting reference was presented in a 1984 BBC series made for television which envisions Hern as a man living in the woods who encourages Sir Loxley to be Robin “The Hooded Man” and while not directly mentioning it suggests that “Robin in the Hood” would in turn become a Priest of Hern and appoint a new Robin to take his place.
